The Creation - Greek Mythology

 The Creation

The creation by Hesiod’s tells about the creation of the world and the birth of Gods. It says that all was started with the emptiness which is called “Chaos”. There was no world, sky, etc. Chaos, then, created Nyx (night), and together they gave birth to Erebus (Darkness).

The what happened next was they married to one another generation by generation.  So, Erebus together with Nyx which was her mother, had their childreen, Aether(bright sky) and Hemera (the day). They also ended up together and had Gaia (earth),Tartarus (Hell), Pontus (Sea), Eros (Love). Now we can see that, the realm was eventually filled.

Without male, Gaia also ended up having kid named Uranus (starry sky), which then became her husband, and produced around 12 titants, one-eyed Cyclopes, the three Hundred-Handed Hecatoncheires. But, Uranus grew as a bad husband and treated his children very bad. He even hid  Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires in Gaia’s womb.

For that, Gaia planned to take him down. She planned to harm Uranus along with her children. Only the youngest child, Cronos, who bravely joined her mother. They, then, created a weapon known as harpe (sharp sickle).

In the evening, when Uranus and Gaia wanted to make out, Cronos came out from his hiding and catastrated his father. The bloods which dripped on the earth created Erinyes/Furies, Giants, Nymphs, Demi-goddesses. And the genitals which was thrown by Cronos into the ocean, came into a goddess of love (Aphrodite).

After that, Cronos was in charge of the kingdom, and no one exaclty knew where was Uranus gone. As a king, he took his sister Rhea as her queen and together were granted with five children which are, Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Hera, Poseidon and, Zeus.

However, just like his father, Cronos also treated his children bad. It’s because, Uranus and Gaia themsleves had vision that Cronos would be overthrone by one of his son. For that, everytime Rhea gave birth, he swallowed all the children, except the last one, Zeus, whom Rhea hid in Crete, and replaced him with a stone wrapped with clothes before giving it to Cronos.

Zeus then grew as handsome and wise god. He wanted to save his siblings. So he plotted to poison Cronos so that he could throw up all swallowed children. All of them were saved.

Cronos were still on charged then. Together with other titans who feared the god generations, they had a  long war with the gods led by Zeus. This war was knows as Titanomachy.

There was no way that the gods would win, but then Zeus was tricky. He released Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires to help them in war. And yeah, Zeus succeed to expel them. Some of them were inprisoned at Tartarus (hell), and as the leader of the titans, Atlas had to bear the universe on his back as his punisment.

I think that’s how, this empty world was filled with creations and others. And the greek mythology aslo shows how gods were created and how’s social life in immortal realm connected to the mortal realm.
