Denotational, Interactional, and Mediational meaning of Kylie Jenner's Youtube Video "DRUNK GET READY WITH ME: KYLIE AND KENDALL"

 

The conversation bellow is a little script of Kylie’s vlog where she invites her sister, Kendal, to get drunk while doing their makeup at Kylie’s studio for youtube video, DRUNK GET READY WITH ME: KYLIE AND KENDALL

 

Kylie   : Hi Kennie

Kendal            : are we ready?

Kylie   : I’m so ready

Kylie   : I chose Reposado (giving a bottle of vodca to Kendal)

-          Denotational meaning is Kylie uttered the sentence in a declarative sentence about Reposado tequila

-          Interactional meaning behind Kylie utterance is that she informs that she is ready to get drunk with Kendal and she shows the brand of tequila they gonna drink.

-          Mediational text behind Kylie utterance is that she hands Kendall the bottle as Kendal arriving at the parking lot. It means that Kylie is so ready to get drunk and well prepared for everything as she is asked before “are we ready?”.

 

Kylie   : I chose Reposado (giving a bottle of vodca to Kendal)

Kendal            : yes.. my favorite

-          Denotational meaning behind the text is that Kendal uttered a declarative phrase stating her interest towards something.

-          Interactional meaning is that kendal felt happy and glad accepting the tequila.

-          mediational meaning  behind the utterance is that Kendal shows her interest and emotion towards the tequila by indicating it as her favorite using deixis “my”. And her interest and excitement is shown by the way she stresses the word “yess..” “my FaVorite”. Kendal uttered the words after Kylie brings up the tequila, it means that Kendal’s utterance is contextualized by it, indicating that Reposado is one of kendal’s favorite tequila.

Kendal            : call someone else to drive us home (smiling)

-          Denotational meaning behind text is Kendal utters an imperative sentence about someone existence to do something.

-          Interactional meaning behind text is that Kendal feels unsafe or worry about she is getting drunk. She thinks that she will get so drunk, so she doesn’t believe in herself that she can drive herself and the crews home after drinking.

-          Mediational meaning behind text is, first she utters that suddenly, which means she tries to show her feelings and emotions about the upcoming situatation  which is getting drunk, especially right after she holding the tequila. Then, she uses the deixis “ us” refering to herself and the crews, because she comes along with them to Kylie’s studio, so she is worried about herself and the crews. And then her smile means that she is being sarcastic, trying to be ok, but deep down, she is worried.

-          denotational meaning of the text is that Kylie utters declarative sentence talking about existence of someone to do something.

-          interactional meaning behind text is that Kylie is well prepared and doesn’t want Kendal to be worried, even preparing her crews in at the studio to drive Kendal home.

-          mediational meaning behind the text is that Kylie refers her crews at studio with “anyone”, and refers kendal and her crews with deixis “you guys”. She also utters the sentence contextualized by Kendal’s statement before which shows her doubtness and worry, so Kylie try to calm Kendal down by stating her crews capability to drive Kendal’s home.

Kylie   : We don’t have shot glasses

Kendal            : Should I waterfall it?

Kylie   : yeah

-          denotational meaning  behind the text is that Kylie utters declarative sentence about the glasses to drink the tequila.

-          interactional meaning behind it is that Kylie is informing that she forget to prepare the shot glasses as they also take the first shot at the garage, and she also gives Kendal indirect order to directly drink it from the bottle.

-          mediational text is that Kylie utters the sentence since she catches Kendal opening the bottle and about to drinking it. Kylie also uses the deixis “us” refering that both of them will not drink by the glasses.

-          interactional meaning behind it means that Kendal assuring that is she really have to drink it in a waterfall way, and also indirectly asking if there any other choice or maybe use another glass.

-          mediational meaning behind the text is that she uses the interrogative sentence in asking about the possibilities reacting to Kylie’s utterance before, like find another glasses, or drink inside the studio since they are still in the garage. And the doubtness also comes from her tone. Kendal also uses the deixis “I” referring to herself to convience or assure that she, herself, has to do the waterfall style to drink the tequila.

-          interactional meaning behing the text is Kylie tries to show off that she can do the waterfall drinking style without the need of shot glass (chaser). She also said “ok” means she is ready to take a shot.

-          interactional meaning behing the utterances, Kylie struggles taking her first shot. Then, she makes sure that people have experience the same.

-          mediational meaning behind text: “the first one” refers to “taking the first shot of tequila” as Kylie about to take it. It means that as Kylie knows, almost everyone is struggle to take the first shot of tequila. Then, she also tries supporting her argument by showing the metalinguistic/reflexive function of language, so that the others can get what she meant or even agree to her. the deixis “you” refers to Kendal and other people in the garage.

-          mediational meaning: Kylie’s doubtness can be seen by using the deixis “we” to make sure the others about taking shot as she meantioned it with the deixis “this” contextualizing from the thing that they’ve been trying to do, which is getting drunk.

-          denotational meaning: Kendal utters declarative sentence of agreement

-          interactional meaning: Kendal agrees, ready and indirectly ordering Kylie to take her shot.

-          mediational meaning: Kendal agrees responding to Kylie question before. Then, she indirectly ordering Kylie since she uses the deixis “we” means both of them  gonna do the shot (she refers it with “it”) where Kendal has taken her shot, so she wants Kylie to do so.

Kylie   : I think we should take two shots for good luck before we go in there.

-          denotational meaning : Kylie utters declarative sentence about suggestion.

-          interactional meaning : Kylie odering Kendal to take two shots of tequila before doing their make up in the studio. Kylie is sure that something gonna happen while they gonna drunk, and  just hoping for the best.

-           mediational meaning: Kylie uses some deixis like “we” referring to both of them should taking two shots. Then, she uses “I” referring that it’s her idea.  the deixis place “there” refers to the make up studio. Then Kylie mentions about “good luck” hoping nothing’s bad happen while they are drunk, as Kylie and we all know that if we drink too much, we’ll get drunk and do things out of our controls.

Kylie   : Cheers. Thank you for coming.

Kendal            : ofc, thank you for having me.

-          denotational meaning: Kylie utters exclamation before drinking and acknowledging Kendal’s existance.

-          interactional meaning: expressing good wishes for their drinking, and expressing her feeling of how glad Kylie is because Kendal made it there.

-          mediational meaning: they cheers since they about to drink while clapping the glass together. And then, Kylie is thankful for Kendal (as she refers her with “you”) to come because Kendal is a supermodel who is busy with her schedule.

Kylie   : Cheers. Thank you for coming.

Kendal            : ofc, thank you for having me.

-          denotational meaning: Kendal utters exclamation of agreement and exclamation of acknowledging Kylie invitation.

-          interactional meaning: Kendal feel greatful for being a guest on Kylie’s youtube video.

-          mediational meaning: Kendal accepting Kylie greatfulness as mentioned before. And Kendal also feel the same towards Kylie as she refers her with deixis “you”. She feel so, because Kylie is a famous celebrity and youtuber, so being her guest in the video feels so special to Kendal, eventhough they both are sisters.
