Sapi-Whorf Language-culture Hypothesis

In my opinion, Sapi-Whorf hypothesis is not fully wrong, but it needs further research to prove it since the paper in meeting 8 gives strong argument which leads me to disagree with their hypothesis. I think culture comes first than language, and language is only the media to deliver and share about the language, that’s why people’s background can be identified by their language use. For that, language becomes an identity of community since it shows their culture, the way they think, behave, etc.

There’s an example in my culture to strengthen my argument. In Indonesia, there’s a term “cebok” which means washing and rinsing butt with water and soap after defecation. Whereas in other culture like America or England, they are not familiar with the term “cebok”, since they have their own style to clean which is wiping with tissue. It means that language development is delivered by culture since different acts construct different language or terms.
